ACT San Antonio Intern’s name: Stephen Gallets Date: May 12, 2013
Subject: Math Grade level: 8
- TEKS Middle School Grade 8
Section 111.28.12.D
OBJECTIVE: Calculate and compare simple interest and compound interest earnings.
- BIG UNDERSTANDING
Students will understand the concept of finance and how it applies to the real world
they will live in after high school.
Students will understand the concept of interest and principal and its impact on money over time.
- ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE
Understand the concept of simple interest. How to calculate simple interest via manipulation
of time, rate, and principal using the formula:
I = Prt where I is interest, P is Principal, r is rate of interest, and t is time periods.
This will demonstrate t students how money grows via the use of simple interest using M&M’s
as an example in the class lesson.
Provide a class project that looks at both simple interest and compound interest
using real world examples. Provide homework to further enhance student comprehension
of simple and compound interest.
- OPENING HOOK
Use real world examples seen in newspapers and the internet and television.
Use M&M’s as principal and demonstrate to the classroom how simple and
compound interest works.
5. INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES/STUDENT ACTIVITIES
